I am coming up to my 29th year of teaching and I have seen education evolve with the introduction of technology. With the access, sharing and communication of information through technology, students are learning and processing differently than ever before. Gone are the days of teachers being the only transmitter of information along with a textbook and a set of encyclopedias. We need to be guiding our learners to gain skills in identifying accurate information, finding connections and critically thinking. In my practice, I believe that guiding students through inquiry, project-based learning, innovation, assessments with choice, digital citizenship, evaluation without numbers, reflection, student-led conferences and exit interviews with the aid of technology are the opportunities we can provide to learners so they can build those skills and be successful in our changing world.
My goal is to share new strategies I am using in my classroom. I am looking to connect with open-minded, innovative and creative educators who are not afraid to take risks and try new ideas because it is the right thing to do for their learners. You may have limited support, you may feel alone in your journey or you are looking to others for constructive feedback. I have been there on all counts. I am still learning, still implementing and never giving up. It’s not just a job, it’s about building a better future for our kids.
